Key takeaway: The 2027 BMW iX5 starts at $79,800 ($81,250 with destination) for 570 hp and an estimated 435 miles of EPA range, about $7,700 more than the gas-powered X5 40 xDrive.

BMW has set pricing for the 2027 iX5, its first fully electric X5 and the first fully electric BMW ever assembled in the United States. The iX5 60 xDrive starts at $79,800 before a $1,450 destination charge, for a total of $81,250, and goes on sale in the first quarter of 2027.

The iX5 is built exclusively at BMW's Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, the same factory that has built every X5 since the nameplate launched in 1999. BMW says production of the iX5 begins before the end of 2026, following the completion of a $1.7 billion investment that expanded Plant Spartanburg and built a new battery-assembly facility, Plant Woodruff, nearby. It's the first fully electric vehicle BMW has built on US soil, and the company has said it plans to assemble at least six fully electric models in the US by 2030, using batteries built locally at Woodruff.

Power comes from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup rated at 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque combined, with BMW quoting an estimated 4.4-second 0-60 mph time. The single launch trim, 60 xDrive, pairs that with a 144-kWh usable battery pack on an 800-volt architecture, the largest battery BMW has put in a production EV to date. BMW's own preliminary estimate, based on EPA test procedures but not yet officially certified, puts range at up to 435 miles.

Charging tops out at 460 kW on DC fast chargers, enough for a 10-80% charge in about 22 minutes or roughly 170 miles added in 10 minutes, according to BMW. Standard AC charging goes up to 15.4 kW. The iX5 also supports bidirectional charging, including vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-load power delivery, letting the SUV's battery power a house or run external equipment.

The iX5 is one of five distinct powertrains BMW is offering on the new, fifth-generation X5: gas, diesel, plug-in hybrid, full electric and, starting in 2028, hydrogen fuel cell. BMW says Plant Spartanburg is now the first factory in its global network able to build all five on a single assembly line, a flexibility the company is counting on as US demand swings between gas and electric SUVs from one year to the next.

On price, the iX5 lands well above the gas-powered X5 40 xDrive, which went on sale this October at $73,550 with destination for a turbocharged six-cylinder making 394 horsepower. That's roughly $7,700 less than the iX5, for 176 less horsepower and a conventional fill-up instead of a plug. Against other three-row-adjacent electric SUVs near its price, the iX5's 435-mile estimated range would be among the longest in the segment if it holds up through EPA certification, ahead of most rivals in the $80,000-$90,000 range.

BMW hasn't said whether a cheaper, single-motor iX5 trim will follow the 60 xDrive, which is the only version confirmed for the car's early 2027 launch. Order books are expected to open closer to the on-sale date; BMW dealers are currently taking refundable reservations.
