2027 Honda Civic Type R Costs $49,990, Up $1,300 — Honda Left the Engine and Manual Alone and Spent the Refresh on Aero, Heated Seats and a New Grille
Honda's hottest hot hatch crosses further into territory where it costs as much as a mid-size sedan with a V6 did a decade ago, for a car whose mechanical formula hasn't changed in years.

Honda has priced the 2027 Civic Type R at $49,990 including destination, a $1,300 increase over the outgoing model's $48,690 starting price. The car arrives at dealerships this fall as what Honda is calling a mid-cycle refresh rather than a new generation — the underlying FL5-platform hatchback that's been on sale since 2023 carries over essentially unchanged where it matters most to the people who buy one.
That means the 315-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and the 6-speed manual transmission are untouched for 2027, still sending 310 lb-ft of torque exclusively to the front wheels through a helical limited-slip differential. Honda isn't offering an automatic or dual-clutch option on the Type R in the US market, and nothing about this refresh changes that — the manual-only approach remains one of the car's defining features against rivals that have mostly moved to paddle-shift transmissions.
What the extra $1,300 buys is mostly aerodynamic and cosmetic. The front bumper and lower grille were redesigned specifically to reduce turbulent airflow into the engine bay while adding front downforce, and the car gets a new Meteorite Gray Metallic paint option alongside the returning Championship White. Inside, the Type R picks up heated seats for the first time in the model's US history, along with Ultrasuede trim on the instrument panel and upper door panels — small comfort additions to a car that has historically prioritized track focus over cabin niceties.
Honda also recalibrated the Type R's aggressive +R drive mode to reduce bouncing and harshness over rough pavement, a complaint that's followed the FL5 generation since its 2023 launch, and sharpened the manual transmission's rev-match function for faster engine response on downshifts. The infotainment system gains Google Gemini integration, the rearview mirror is now auto-dimming, and both USB ports switch to USB-C — modernization items that bring the Type R's interior tech closer to the rest of Honda's 2027 lineup rather than anything performance-specific.
The price increase lands the same month Toyota raised the 2027 Camry by $700 and Chevrolet added $300 to every 2027 Corvette trim, part of a broader pattern of model-year price creep across the industry heading into 2027. At just under $50,000, the Civic Type R now sits firmly in territory once occupied by genuine sports cars and small luxury sedans — a Civic, however thoroughly reworked, crossing a price threshold that would have seemed absurd for the nameplate a decade ago.
For buyers cross-shopping the segment, the calculus hasn't fundamentally changed: the 2027 Type R is still the same sharp, front-wheel-drive track weapon it's been since 2023, now with a smoother ride in its most aggressive mode and a few more creature comforts, at a price that keeps climbing faster than inflation alone would explain. Anyone who already liked the FL5-generation Type R has no new mechanical reason to wait for 2027; anyone priced out at $48,690 isn't getting any more room at $49,990.
